The Laing Art Gallery opened more than 100 years ago in 1904 and since then has become managed by the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums. The gallery’s collection of includes John Martin’s dramatic ‘The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah’ as well as important works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edward Burne-Jones, William Holman Hunts’ ‘Isabella and the Pot of Basil’ from 1868 and Ben Nicholson. They also have local paintings including works by Ralph Hedley. There is also an extensive collection of 18th- and 19th-century watercolours and drawings, including work by J.M.W Turner and John Sell Cotman. Also in the late 1800s, Newcastle was one of the biggest glass producers and the artist William Beilby has his work with enamelled glass as part of the ceramic portion of the gallery.
