Step into the past at this world-famous open-air museum, telling the story of life in the North East of England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. Explore the 350-acre site and taste traditional food from a coal-fired range, hop on board a tram or steam train, play schoolyard games or take a ride on the tramway and experience the atmosphere of an earlier generation.
Explore the 1900s town and see how families lived and worked in the years leading up to the First World War. Visit the 1900s Pit Village and see what’s cooking in the cottages, practise your handwriting in the school and visit the chapel. Don’t forget to say hello to the pit ponies in their stables! Visit the 1940s farm and discover how life was on the Home Front during the Second World War. Look out for the Land Girls and the Home Guard! No recreation of the history of North East England would be complete without a 1900s colliery and the people who worked and lived around it. Go back to the 1820s and visit beautiful Pockerley Old Hall’s new and old houses and enjoy the magnificent gardens. Take a ride on Pockerley Waggonway and wander through the glorious Georgian landscape. All aboard! See Rowley Railway Station as it looked in Edwardian times with its signal box, waiting rooms and goods yard and spot a variety of wagons on display.
