Where can I see Albatross in New Zealand?

The only place in the world where the Northern Royal Albatross breeds is New Zealand, throughout the countries islands. The Royal Albatross Centre is the only mainland location where these amazing birds breed, making a must-do activity for any visit to the South Island or Dunedin!

The Royal Albatross centre is located at the foot of Taiaroa Head in Dunedin, a place that was recommended to visit by Sir David Attenborough himself! Established in 1972, the centre is now home to 250 breeding albatross, as well as over 200 other rare species of birds and mammals!

In your Royal Albatross viewing experience, you’ll be able to watch these incredible birds soar from the Richdale Observatory, while your friendly and knowledgeable guide shares fascinating insights about the their breeding cycles and more, getting an amazing view of the Pacific ocean. You’ll get to know the story of the majestic birds, and see an exclusive short movie about the natural history of New Zealand.

History fans can add a tour of the underground tunnel system underneath the colony to the experience, where you’ll learn about the exciting history of Taiaroa Head. Discover a small Maori camp from the 1300’s, a centuries old lighthouse at the entrance to Otago Harbour and an underground defence base used in WWII.
