Explore the Breath-taking Scenery at Tūpare

Looking for somewhere to enjoy a quiet and relaxing day out? Come along to Tūpare and soak up the atmosphere of the stunningly landscaped gardens and homestead! With gorgeous scenery and a closeness to nature, this is the perfect tranquil getaway for those who need it!

Why should I visit Tūpare?

Tūpare garden has recently earned the New Zealand Gardens Trust highest six-star rating! This is an achievement that is shared only by 13 other locations nationally!

Tūpare is a premier landscaped garden and unique homestead that was originally developed by Sir Russel Matthews and his family in 1932. Sculpted from a hill overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, the plants and landscapes stay true to the area’s heritage. As visitors walk the winding paths that are cut into the hillside, they will find stately trees, delicious maples, copper beeches and dawn redwoods, as well as a marvellous collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas that were all planted by Sir Russel himself.

The river flat at the gardens has a gentle atmosphere with the simple plantings of specimen trees combined with the soft movement of the wind and water. Here visitors will find free gas barbeques and picnic areas that are popular with summer visitors who would like to enjoy a swim in the river before their picnic!

On their visit, guests are able to enjoy the splendour of Tūpare at a High Tea in the Chapman-Taylor house. The High Tea events take place on the first Sunday of every month from May through October. Tickets are $20 per person and numbers can be limited. Guests can purchase their tickets from BlackBird Society – 79 Devon Street East New Plymouth with cash only.
