Shetland Pony Facts

  • Shetland ponies have been living in Shetland for over 4000 years! It is thought that they crossed the ice fields during the final years of the last ice age – while woolly mammoths still roamed the earth.
  • While they may be the smallest of Britain’s horse breeds, they are among the most robust and hardiest. The harsh winters of the Shetlands led to their sturdy bodies.
  • There are 100,000 Shetland ponies worldwide. This means that they outnumber the people actually living on the island by 4 to 1!
