The Falkirk Wheel

No trip to Scotland is complete without a trip to this iconic landmark!

The Falkirk Wheel is the world’s only rotating boat lift, with the power to lift boats 115ft in the air connecting the Fourth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The Falkirk Wheel was born from the Millennium Link project, a plan to set up coast-to-coast navigation of the canals for the first time in over 40 years!  It was originally designed to replace a series of old 19th century lock gates, and has long since become a symbol of beautiful and efficient Scottish engineering. There’s plenty to see on-site, such as the Children’s Activity Zone, the Mini Canal and the Water Activity Zone.

The Falkirk Wheel Experience boat ride is a round trip, with an ascent and decent lasting about 60 minutes.

Based in Fife, Jill Calder has been working as an illustrator since 1993. She is also a calligrapher and a digital artist with a love of drawing, and a passion for bright colour. This exhibition gives you a glimpse into Jill’s world from her beginnings at art college in Cumbria in the late 1980s to her current collaboration with English Heritage. On display you will see a wide selection of Jill's artwork from draft sketches through to published illustrations. Jill's love of ink shines through in this exhibition and examples of her designs include editorial commissions, gallery work and book art. Introduced to the idea of illustrating picture books back in 2011, Jill has since immersed herself in the children's book world. This has created many opportunities for Jill including working with children in schools and libraries, both locally and internationally. '...give me a dip pen, a stick or a fat brush plus a pot of black ink, and I'm happy to draw, draw, draw...' Jill Calder, 2022
