Pottery Tips

Your course at Turning Earth will cover everything you need to know, but here are some general tips to keep in mind:

  • Using more clay can save you trouble – cutting off a little clay from the top or bottom of your pot or vase is a lot easier than starting over because you didn’t use enough.
  • Use less water – you’ll usually only need a small amount of water when throwing clay to stop it from sticking to your hands. Using too much can make your clay softer and more likely to collapse.
  • Keep your hands steady when throwing as this is important for creating even surfaces – resting your elbow against your hips or your ribs can help.

Due to the nature of pottery, these courses are a little bit more time consuming than other activities, with full courses ranging from 8-12 weeks. However you are welcome to pop into a couple of classes for shorter periods of time in order to complete one piece, but you will need to come and pick up any kiln-fired pieces 4 weeks later.

  • £365 for their standard 12-week course
  • Weekly classes are 3 hours long each
  • You can also sign up for a week-long intensive course for the same price
  • Basic tools and aprons are provided but you are welcome to bring your own
  • £3.60 fee for kiln firing
  • Open to students 16 years and up
