Go on a journey 140m underground and explore and learn about the rich and long history of coal mining in England! The museum’s underground tour lets you hear about the harsh realities of working in a coal mine throughout history with an experienced guide. But, above ground, the museum has lots to offer too! They have lots of key exhibits and collections to learn about how mining works and how people lived and worked in the area. You can also have a go at various mining-related activities.
Explore the many colliery buildings and see what they have inside! Learn about and meet some pit ponies who helped moved coal. There is also lots to do for the little ones. They have play and learning areas and a nature walk outside which is a great place to see some birds and have a picnic. A museum is a great place for a family day out and we are sure with their friendly staff and great exhibits and experiences that everyone will be happy with a day out at the National Coal Mining Museum.
