The Pinnacles Hike in Coromandel

There’s an incredible amount of hikes and walks to complete in New Zealand, from the beautiful lakes and forests of the Fiordland to the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps. However, there’s nothing quite like the Pinnacles – this stunning, rugged mountain range in the Coromandel is a breath-taking landscape that rewards hikers with astonishing views of the Coromandel and the South Pacific Ocean.

You won’t find rock formations quite like Pinnacles anywhere else, formed over thousands of years. This unique environment was unsurprisingly chosen by Peter Jackson as a filming spot for the famous Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, where Aragorn, Gimili and Legolas hauntingly passed through the Paths of the Dead. More than just a picturesque hike, you’ll discover a rich history along the way – your guides will share the stories of the area’s long timber history, taking you up the packhorse trails where you’ll uncover giant Kauri tree stumps and tramlines that bring the history of the Pinnacles to life. You’ll make your way spectacular peak that has been shaped by volcanic activity, giving you panoramic views the entire Coromandel Peninsula and beyond!

Your guides at Coromandel Adventures will collect you from Coromandel Town, taking you in a shuttle bus along the Thames coast towards the stunning Kauaeranga Valley and to the start of your adventure. Watch the sunset behind the hills of the northern Coromandel, and then take your shuttle bus back to town.
