Enchanting Portmeirion Village in North Wales

Get ready for a taste of Italy without having to leave the UK! Portmeirion Village is truly a one-of-a-kind destination. Situated in the idyllic Penrhyndeudraeth area on the estuary of the River Dwyryd, this iconic tourist village was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 – he wished to portray how a naturally handsome area could be developed without taking away it’s magic. Its iconic nostalgic look and sunny aesthetic are modelled after the delightful seaside towns of Italy and the Mediterranean, hence the village being referred to as an “Italianate” village.

There’s so much to see in this unique town! There’s a selection of cafes to choose from: The Town Hall Cafe, Caffe’r Sgwâr, and Angel Ices for gelato on those warmer days! There are also three shops to peruse in the village: The Rob Piercy Gallery, The Prisoner Shop for memorabilia from the 1960s TV series which was filmed in the town, and The Ship Shop for presents, housewares, and some famous Portmeirion Pottery pieces.

Fancy staying a night or two? Portmeirion has two hotels – The Hotel Portmeirion and Castell Deudraeth, both with fine dining establishments. There are also thirteen self-catering cottages available to rent if that’s more your style.
