Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel

Calling all Scottish history enthusiasts! Do you want to explore some of the sites that are hugely important in the formation of this small nation? If so, Dunstaffnage Castle and chapel is the perfect site for you. Come and feast your eyes on the home of the MacDougall clan, built around 1240. This site is important in the context of Scottish history because it was captured by the famous Robert the Bruce in 1308! While under the control of the MacDougal’s the site was pivotal in the turbulent times of Scottish and Norwegian battles over control of the Hebrides.

The Castle also played host to a famous heroine in Scotland’s story. Flora MacDonald had helped Bonnie Prince Charlie of the Redcoats flee to the Isle of Skye following a defeat. For her crimes, she was held at Dunstaffnage before being sent to the Tower of London in 1746. These are of course just some of the stories that these walls have to tell, and the best way to grasp them is to feast your eyes on this beautiful site. The Castle is open from 10 am-4 pm daily. However, from the 1st of October to the 31st of March, it opens Tuesday to Saturday at the same time.
